Description

Source: leafsnap

Sadleria cyatheoides, commonly known as amaumau fern or ʻamaʻu, is a fern species in the family Blechnaceae, in the eupolypods II clade of the order Polypodiales, in the class Polypodiopsida. It is endemic to Hawaii and inhabits lava flows, open areas, and wet forests on all major islands up to an altitude of 1,676 m (5,499 ft). Reaching a height of 0.9–1.5 m (3.0–4.9 ft) and a trunk diameter of 7.5–10 cm (3.0–3.9 in), ʻamaʻu resembles a small tree fern. Kīlauea's Halemaʻumaʻu is named for this species.

Care Guide

💧 Water

The Amaumau fern, native to the volcanic slopes of Hawaii, thrives in high humidity and periodic rainfall. While it can tolerate moderate drought, it requires watering every 1-2 weeks to keep the soil moist without becoming waterlogged. As an evergreen plant, the Amaumau fern adapts well to sporadic rainfall and flourishes outdoors in humid climates.

☀️ Light Full shade

The Amaumau fern is native to habitats such as forest understories or rocky areas that provide natural shade. It prefers Full Shade but can tolerate Partial Sun.

✂️ Pruning

The Amaumau fern benefits greatly from pruning in early spring. By removing dead fronds, you can promote healthy growth and help prevent pest infestations. It's crucial to use clean and sharp tools to reduce the risk of diseases. This practice encourages the fern's development during its recovery period, enhancing both its vigor and appearance.
