Description

Source: leafsnap

Sedum reflexum, commonly known as stonecrop or reflexed stonecrop, is a low-growing succulent plant belonging to the Crassulaceae family. Native to Europe and Asia, it has been widely cultivated elsewhere due to its ornamental appeal. This plant forms a mat-like spread and can grow up to 15 centimeters in height with a spread of up to 60 centimeters. Its fleshy, blue-green leaves are arranged in opposite pairs along the stems and exhibit a slightly downward curve, giving rise to its common name "reflexed stonecrop." Sedum reflexum produces small, yellow, star-shaped flowers that bloom from late spring through summer atop short stems above the foliage. These flowers are attractive to bees and other pollinators. Highly drought-tolerant, this plant thrives even in poor soil conditions, making it an excellent choice for rock gardens or as ground cover on slopes, where it helps prevent soil erosion. For optimal growth, Sedum reflexum requires full sun exposure but can also tolerate partial shade. It prefers well-draining soils with low fertility levels. Overall, Sedum reflexum is an attractive, low-maintenance succulent ground cover that is ideal for gardeners seeking easy-to-grow plants with ornamental value.

☀️ Light Full sun

The jenny's stonecrop prefers plentiful sunlight for strong growth. In its native habitat it often basked in bright sun. However, the jenny's stonecrop can also tolerate places that receive dappled sunlight. Both excessive and insufficient exposure can affect its health.

Ideal: Full sun
🌡️ Temperature 5–35°C

Although Jenny's stonecrop tolerates some heat, it mainly performs best and grows in the cooler months, going dormant in summer. In very hot summer conditions, provide shade to avoid scorching from intense sun. Watering should be reduced or stopped during the hottest part of the year to prevent root rot. The plant shows vigorous growth in winter and spring. As long as temperatures do not fall too low, it will continue to grow steadily.

🌱 Fertilizer

Jenny's stonecrop needs only light fertilization once or twice a year during the growing season. Avoid feeding it in winter or in summer when it is dormant. Use less fertilizer for plants that have been repotted and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying fertilizer. Fertilizing promotes healthy growth and encourages flowering.
