Spikes of hooded purplish-pink flowers are borne throughout summer.The Latin specific epithet macrantha means "large-flowered".The cultivars 'Robusta', 'Superba', and 'Violacea' have gained the Royal Horticultural Society’s Award of Garden Merit.
