Description
Source: leafsnapPaper Spine Cactus, also known as Tephrocactus articulatus var. papyracanthus has long, flat spines that resemble paper (hence the name Paper Spine Cactus). The spines start to curl as they lengthen. The segments of Paper Spine Cacti are tiny and oval, and they are rather easy to break off of the plant. These plants normally don't grow any taller than 12 inches because of this. The Paper Spine Cactus plant I recently bought from Trader Joe's has me completely smitten! I conducted a little research to make sure I gave my new plant the necessary care.
Care Guide
💧 Water Every 2 weeks
The Cholla cactus, which naturally grows in arid environments, is well-adapted to drought conditions. It stores water in its fleshy stems and requires only occasional watering, roughly once every three weeks. To thrive and avoid root rot, the cactus benefits from full sunlight and well-draining soil.
☀️ Light Full sun
The cholla cactus thrives under ample levels of light exposure during the day. It can endure partly shaded environments, but it favours well-lit conditions that promote vigorous growth and a strong structure. Its hardy characteristics stem from environments with extensive daylight. Excessive sunlight or insufficient lighting could affect the plant, impacting its development and liveliness.
🌡️ Temperature 15–35°C
The Cholla cactus thrives in environments where temperatures range from 59 to 95 °F (15 to 35 ℃), as it is indigenous to such warm climates. Typically, it doesn't require seasonal modifications, although minimal adjustments might be advantageous if the heat or cold becomes extreme.
💨 Humidity dry (<40%)
This plant prefers dry conditions, so don't mist it. However, watering it less often can also thrive in higher humidity.
🪴 Soil 6-7
🌱 Fertilizer
For the Cholla cactus, it is adequate to provide mild amounts of fertilizer 1-2 instances annually during the growth phase. Refrain from fertilizing during its dormant periods in the winter and summer. After repotting, limit the amount of fertilizer and allow a few months to pass before fertilizing again. The nutrient boost from fertilizing promotes robust growth and stimulates blooming.
🪴 Pot & Repot 2-3 years
To promote healthy growth, repot your cholla cactus every 2-3 years in the spring. Choose a larger pot with sandy, well-draining soil. After repotting, place the cactus in a spot with bright, indirect light and water it sparingly to maintain its health and vibrancy.
✂️ Pruning
Cholla cactus needs minimal pruning. Regularly remove any withered flowers and branches to redirect nutrients toward healthy growth.

☠️ Toxicity
Cacti have non-toxic spines. Some cactus spines, however, can be dangerous if they pierce deeply into tissues and cause bruising, bleeding, or even dead tissues. These spines include Cholla or hairlike spines. The harmless Paper Spine Cactus has long, white, paper-like spines that resemble paper. It also has glochids, which are tiny barbed spines with the ability to stick to your flesh.
