Christella normalis, synonym Thelypteris kunthii, sometimes known as Kunth's maiden fern or southern shield fern, is the most common of the maiden ferns in the southeastern United States south of the fall line. It ranges westward to eastern Texas. It usually grows in moist to dry terrestrial situations, but can also be epipetric. It often grows as a greenhouse escape in areas north of its usual range.
Kunth's maiden fern typically shows strong resistance to disease and is affected by relatively few insect pests. Its care is regarded as challenging because it needs a consistently moist setting and frequent watering. At the same time, the roots can rot if the plant is overwatered or kept in poorly ventilated conditions. It is better suited to those with some cultivation experience, since most people can keep it alive for a time. Even so, Kunth's maiden fern may struggle to prosper, and its fronds can dry out and become less healthy as time passes.
How to keep Thelypteris Kunthii.
Light
Kunth's maiden fern performs best in a place where it can get the maximum amount of sunlight possible throughout the day. Given adequate light, it will grow well. It can tolerate areas with somewhat less sunlight, however. Still, either too little or too much sun can prevent the plant from reaching its full growth potential, reflecting the conditions of its native habitat.
Temperature
Kunth's maiden fern, a temperate woody species, thrives in a temperature range of 59 to 95 ℉ (15 to 35 ℃), consistent with its native habitat. In cooler seasons, temperatures below 59℉ (15℃) may prompt the plant to go dormant, while in hotter seasons, temperatures above 95℉ (35℃) can result in wilting. Adjusting light levels and humidity can help keep temperatures suitable for optimal growth.
Pot & Repot
When repotting Kunth's maiden fern, select a pot 1-2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger with good drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, making sure the root ball sits slightly lower than the rim of the flower pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and place it in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.
