Description

Source: leafsnap

Kolbii (Tillandsia kolbii, Kolbii) has delicate green leaves that are small and fluffy. With adequate care, they may also produce gorgeous, unusual red, orange, or purple flowers. The leaves of these plants absorb nutrients and water rather than the rots. As a result, unlike the typical houseplant, they do not have large root systems. These plants don't require a pot and may be placed wherever you want some greenery. You may even hang them from the ceiling. These amazing, tiny plants only bloom once in their lives, and it might take years. When they reach adulthood, they will have pups. These are fresh, little air plants that will sprout from the base of the mother plant.

Care Guide

💧 Water once a week

Unlike other houseplants, Tillandsia kolbii does not require frequent watering. To give your air plant the water it needs, soak it in a bowl of water for 10 to 30 minutes once or twice a week. To minimize harm to your air plant's delicate blossom, hold it slightly above the water while soaking. After you've removed your air plant from the water, turn it upside-down to drain any extra water from its foliage, and then return it to its display area. Allow your air plant to completely dry after the next soaking session. This will aid in the prevention of decay. Pure water, such as spring or filtered water, should be used. If you're using tap water, allow at least 24 hours for the chlorine to dissipate.

Suggested frequency: once a week

🌡️ Temperature

In humid settings, Tillandsia kolbii flourishes. It will get the humidity and moisture it needs by misting it on a regular basis. If you live in a dry climate, you may need to spray your air plant every day. In humid areas, you may only need to sprinkle it every three days or so. Some plants benefit from warmer temperatures as well. Keep them away from heaters and air conditioners, though. Excessive heat or cold can be harmful to plants. Keep them in a well-ventilated area with lots of indirect sunshine.

🪴 Soil
🌱 Fertilizer

Because air plants lack soil, fertiliser must be added to the water during their monthly bath. It's preferable to use an air plant-specific fertilizer. Fertilizer, on the other hand, isn't a significant issue for these little plants. Even if you don't offer them any extra food, they'll flourish. If you apply too much fertilizer, your Tillandsia kolbii may perish.

🪴 Pot & Repot
✂️ Pruning

Once these plants have reached maturity, they produce "pups." These are young air plants. Pruning is not necessary. Here's how to remove your Tillandsia kolbii puppies after they're fully grown. To begin, wait until your pup is at least one-third the size of the mother plant. Second, find the pup's base and carefully pull it away from the mother plant. To avoid ripping the pup's top leaves, grasp the pup at its base leaves. A sharp knife or set of snips may be required to cut the pup from the mother if it does not simply pop off. Finally, after the puppy is free, place it in a light, well-ventilated area.
