ON THIS PLANT

Utricularia floridana, the Florida yellow bladderwort, is a large affixed aquatic carnivorous plant in the bladderwort genus within the bladderwort family). It is a perennial plant that is endemic to southeastern United States (Florida, Georgia, Alabama, and the Carolinas).

A note from PlantMom

Florida yellow bladderwort has moderate resistance to disease and needs a high-humidity environment. If ventilation is poor, it can become susceptible to rot. The plant’s care is rated difficult because it requires continuous humidification to keep humidity levels high. It is also highly prone to rot when the environment lacks proper ventilation and becomes too hot. Florida yellow bladderwort is appropriate for growers with more experience who can provide a suitable growing environment.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Utricularia Floridana.

Light

Florida yellow bladderwort comes from habitats with plenty of sunlight, including open bogs and sunny wetlands. It prefers full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.

Temperature

Florida yellow bladderwort does best in moderate temperatures, roughly the range most people find comfortable. It prefers conditions that are neither excessively hot nor cold. The primary problem with high heat is an increased risk of sunburn, so offering some shade in summer is advisable to reduce overheating. When temperatures fall, the plant goes dormant; to maintain continuous growth you need to keep warmer conditions through the winter. Frost can damage the plant and should be avoided.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Florida yellow bladderwort, select a pot 1-2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger with ample drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, making sure the root ball is slightly lower than the rim of the flower pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and place in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.
