Utricularia menziesii, commonly known as redcoats, is a perennial, terrestrial carnivorous plant that belongs to the genus Utricularia (family Lentibulariaceae). It is endemic to the coastal regions of Western Australia.
Redcoats has moderate resistance to disease and requires a high-humidity environment. However, if it lacks proper ventilation it can be prone to rot. Its care level is considered difficult because it needs constant humidification to maintain that high humidity. Redcoats is also highly vulnerable to rot when the environment is poorly ventilated and too hot. This plant is best suited to growers with more experience who can provide an appropriate growing environment.
How to keep Utricularia Menziesii.
Light
Redcoats thrives in areas that receive plenty of sunlight like open bogs and sun-drenched wetlands. It favors conditions with full sun exposure, although it can also withstand areas with partial sunlight.
Temperature
Redcoats flourish in mild climates that are typically preferred by people. They do well in weather conditions that are not excessively hot or overly cold. The chief problem with soaring temperatures is the potential for sunburn, and it's recommended to offer some shelter during the summer to sidestep extreme warmth. When the temperature falls, Redcoats become dormant. If sustained growth is the aim, it's a must to keep temperatures higher during winter months. Frost can inflict harm on the plant, so it should be steered clear of.
Pruning
To ensure optimal health and vibrant blooms, prune redcoat plants in early spring. This helps remove dead stems and improves air circulation. Be careful not to prune too heavily, as redcoats are sensitive to extensive cutting. Regular maintenance will help maintain a compact shape and encourage more vibrant flowering.
Pot & Repot
When transplanting Redcoats, select a container that is 1-2 inches (2.5-5 cm) larger and has sufficient drainage. Utilize a potting mix that drains well. Perform the repotting during spring or fall, making sure that the root ball is a bit below the flower pot's edge. After the repotting, water the plant thoroughly and position it in a cozy area with soft sunlight.
