ON THIS PLANT

Xanthium strumarium (rough cocklebur, clotbur, common cocklebur, large cocklebur, woolgarie bur) is a species of annual plants of the family Asteraceae. Some sources claim it originates in southern Europe and Asia, but has been extensively naturalized elsewhere. Others, such as the Flora of China and Flora of North America, state it orignates in the Americas but was an early introduction to Eurasia.

A note from PlantMom

Common cocklebur has good disease resistance and is generally not prone to diseases. Still, it can be affected by pests and diseases present in its surroundings. These infections are usually not severe. Regarding care, the plant needs medium maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to preserve a neat appearance and healthy growth. Fertilizing can also aid in encouraging flowering. Common cocklebur is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or patio, and does not demand much care experience. It may require more attention when grown indoors.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Xanthium Pungens.

Light

Common cocklebur comes from sunny, open habitats and does best in full sun. It can tolerate some shade but favors direct sunlight for optimal growth. This plant, which can be annual or biennial, is recognized for its preference for sunlight.

Temperature

Common cocklebur can tolerate a wide range of temperatures, but its distribution can still be restricted by different combinations of moisture and heat. It performs best in warm summer climates with sufficient rainfall or irrigation. Extended periods of cloudy, rainy weather, as well as prolonged high temperatures, can raise the likelihood of Common cocklebur dying. In winter, adequate protection from the cold can improve the plant's survival rate.

Fertilizer

Common cocklebur benefits from regular, low-strength fertilizer applications to encourage healthy leaf development. You should feed Common cocklebur roughly once a month throughout the summer. Nitrogen is important for foliage, and providing nitrogen-rich supplements helps Common cocklebur prosper.
