ON THIS PLANT

Bothriochloa macra, commonly known as red-leg grass, red grass, redleg or pitted beard grass is a perennial grass species that is native to eastern Australia and New Zealand. It is naturalised in Tasmania and Norfolk Island.

A note from PlantMom

Red grass shows good resistance to disease and is generally unlikely to suffer from illnesses. As for care, this plant is relatively low-maintenance. Planted outdoors, it needs little watering, and larger plants typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Red grass is suitable for anyone who has an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and does not call for much gardening experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Bothriochloa Macra.

Light

Originating from open environments often found in meadows and grasslands, red grass is a hardy perennial plant that loves the sun. While it flourishes best in full sun exposure, it also has the ability to endure partial sunlight conditions.

Temperature

The capability to adjust to various temperature ranges is inherent in Red grass, although its spread may still be constrained by distinct setups of heat and water conditions. It flourishes most successfully in mild climates during the summer season when there's enough rainfall or irrigation. Continuous episodes of overcast and rainy weather, along with extended high temperatures, can heighten the chances of Red grass perishing. During the wintertime, appropriate safeguarding against the cold can augment the survival rate of the plant.

Fertilizer

To stimulate healthy development, red grass needs extra nutrients. Applying compost around the plant's base in the spring can supply the required nutrition efficiently. Fertilization assists in promoting robust growth and provides the plant with resistance against diseases and pests.
