A note from PlantMom

Hairy crassula has moderate disease resistance and is more sensitive to humidity. It is vulnerable to disease when humidity is high and is prone to root rot during dormancy. In terms of care, Hairy crassula is drought-tolerant but requires more water during the growing season. Watering should be greatly reduced or stopped entirely during the dormant period. Hairy crassula is appropriate for growers with some experience, though it can be challenging to care for, particularly during dormancy. It is especially suited to people who can dedicate time to its care during the winter months.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Crassula Obovata.

Light

Hairy crassula comes from habitats with filtered light, like the understory of forests or rocky locations that provide natural shade. It prefers partial sunlight but is capable of tolerating full sun.

Temperature

Although Hairy crassula tolerates some heat, it mainly thrives and grows in the cooler months and becomes dormant during summer. In very hot weather, it should be given shade to avoid scorching from strong sunlight. Watering should be reduced or stopped during the hottest period to prevent root rot. Winter and spring are the times of vigorous growth for Hairy crassula, and it will keep growing steadily so long as temperatures do not fall too low.

Fertilizer

For Hairy crassula, light applications of fertilizer once or twice a year during the growing season are sufficient. Avoid feeding in winter and in summer when the plant is dormant. Reduce fertilization for recently repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying fertilizer. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and promotes flowering.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Hairy crassula, choose a pot slightly larger than the current one that has good drainage. Use a gritty, well-draining succulent or cactus mix. Carefully lift the plant from its old pot, remove excess soil, and plant it at the same depth. Wait a few days before watering so any root injury can heal. Repot in spring or fall and place it in a brightly lit spot.
