Gnaphalium norvegicum, the highland cudweed or Norwegian arctic cudweed, is a European species of plants in the family Asteraceae. It is widespread across much of Europe from the Mediterranean north to Finland and Iceland.Gnaphalium norvegicum is similar to Gnaphalium sylvaticum, heath cudweed. However, it is 8 to 30 cm tall, the leaves are 3 veined, and all roughly equal in length. The leaves are also wooly/hairy on both sides. It is a rare plant found in central Scotland and in the northern highlands, found on acidic mountain rocks. It flowers July to August.
Norwegian arctic cudweed has strong disease resistance and is generally not prone to illnesses. However, it can be vulnerable to pests and diseases present in its environment. Such infections are usually minor. Regarding care, this plant requires moderate maintenance. It should be pruned regularly to keep a neat appearance and support healthy growth. Fertilizing can also encourage flowering. Norwegian arctic cudweed is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, like a garden or patio, and does not demand extensive plant-care experience. It may need more attention when kept indoors.
How to keep Gnaphalium Norvegicum.
Light
Norwegian arctic cudweed is a perennial, herbaceous plant that prefers sunny locations and comes from open habitats, commonly thriving in meadows and grasslands. It favors full sun but can also tolerate partial sun.
Fertilizer
One fertilizer application in spring is typically enough for Norwegian arctic cudweed, though repeated feedings can optimize growth. Apply fertilizer about every month to six weeks. Fertilization improves the leaves’ appearance and function, helping maintain even color and a healthy texture. It also promotes root development and nutrient uptake, supporting the plant’s long-term health.
