ON THIS PLANT

Myrica rubra, also called yangmei (Chinese: 杨梅; pinyin: yángméi; Cantonese: yeung4 mui4; Shanghainese: [ɦiɐ̃².mɛ⁴]), yamamomo (Japanese: ヤマモモ), Chinese bayberry, red bayberry, yumberry, waxberry, or Chinese strawberry (and often mistranslated from Chinese as arbutus) is a subtropical tree grown for its fruit.

A note from PlantMom

Red bayberry shows strong disease resistance and is generally not prone to disease. Regarding care, this plant is fairly low maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs only light watering, and larger plants typically do not need pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. Red bayberry is appropriate for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or a deck, and does not require much prior care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Myrica Rubra.

Light

Red bayberry performs best in sites that get unobstructed, full-day sunlight. This degree of sun exposure can benefit the plant’s health, encouraging strong growth and improved fruit yield. On the other hand, excessive or insufficient light can cause stress, weak growth, and decreased fruit production. Given its natural environment, this amount of sunlight is common.

Temperature

Red bayberry is naturally adapted to temperate climates, with an optimal temperature range of 68 to 95 °F (20 to 35 ℃). It favors warm, humid conditions. Seasonal temperature adjustments may be needed to maintain healthy growth.

Fertilizer

Use organic fertilizers (e.g., fish emulsion, compost) instead of chemical fertilizers for Red bayberry. Supply higher levels of nitrogen and phosphorus to young plants in spring. Work compost or fertilizer into the soil before or after planting. For mature plants, apply a balanced fertilizer or one that addresses specific deficiencies in spring. Nutrient deficiency produces small leaves, short branches, yellow or bronze foliage, acidic fruits, premature fruit drop, and fruit splitting.
