ON THIS PLANT

Peperomia monticola is a species of plant in the genus Peperomia. It is endemic to Mexico. It is a geophytic plant, storing water and reserves in an underground tuber. During dry periods, parts above ground, such as leaves, will wither away but the plant will survive due to the tuber. When more rain falls, the plant regrows its stalks and leaves on the surface.

A note from PlantMom

Peperomia monticola shows strong resistance to diseases and is generally not prone to illness. Still, it can develop leaf spots if light and airflow are poor or if it is overwatered. The plant is considered easy to care for, since it mainly needs regular watering and little else. Peperomia monticola is a good choice for people who do not have the time or energy to devote to frequent maintenance.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Peperomia Monticola.

Light

Peperomia monticola naturally occurs in places like forest understories and rocky sites that provide natural shade. It favors partial sun but can grow in full sun or full shade, demonstrating its versatility and hardiness.

Temperature

Peperomia monticola comes from tropical areas where the climate is generally warm and humid. As a result, it is adapted to higher temperatures and humidity. It does not tolerate sudden temperature shifts and prefers a consistent temperature, so avoiding fluctuations indoors is important. It normally cannot endure cold conditions and requires warmer temperatures to grow. If the surrounding temperature falls too low, the plant may stop growing or even die.

Fertilizer

Appropriate fertilization is essential for Peperomia monticola's health and appearance. Fertilize Peperomia monticola during summer, repeating the treatment monthly throughout the season. Nutrients drive growth and support the plant’s parts. Fertilizing improves Peperomia monticola's flowering, ensuring the best blooms.

Pot & Repot

When repotting Peperomia monticola, select a pot 1-2 inches (2.5–5.1 cm) larger with plenty of drainage. Use a well-draining potting mix. Repot in spring or fall, making sure the root ball is positioned slightly lower than the rim of the flower pot. Water thoroughly after repotting and place in a warm spot with indirect sunlight.
