Secale montanum, wild perennial rye, is a species in the rye genus Secale native to the Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Caucasus region, and eastwards through Iran to Pakistan. It is a short-lived, self-fertile perennial. It is thought to be the ultimate parent of domesticated rye (Secale cereale), and crosses with S. cereale have had some success in creating fodder cultivars. Some authorities consider the synonym Secale strictum C.Presl. to have priority.
Mountain rye has strong resistance to disease and is typically not prone to infections. In terms of care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When planted outdoors it needs little watering, and larger plants generally do not require pruning. However, smaller plants should be pruned after they have bloomed. Mountain ryet is appropriate for anyone with an outdoor area, such as a garden or deck, and it does not demand a lot of gardening experience.
How to keep Secale Strictum.
Light
Mountain rye comes from bright, open habitats and does best in full sun. It can tolerate some partial shade but favors direct sunlight for peak growth. This plant, which is annual or biennial, is known for its sun-loving habit.
Temperature
Mountain rye can adjust to a wide variety of temperature conditions, but its distribution may still be restricted by particular combinations of water and heat. It performs best in warm summer climates with adequate rainfall or irrigation. Prolonged periods of cloudy, rainy weather, as well as extended high temperatures, increase the likelihood of Mountain rye dying. In winter, protecting the plant from cold can improve its chances of survival.
Fertilizer
To achieve optimal growth, Mountain rye needs three fertilizer applications: one before planting, one month after the seedlings emerge, and a final application 1 to 1.5 months after the second. Some Mountain rye varieties also benefit from extra fertilizer at planting to promote rapid growth.
