ON THIS PLANT

Sorbus anglica, the English whitebeam, is a species of whitebeam tree in the family Rosaceae. It is uncommonly found in Ireland and the United Kingdom, with an entire British population estimated at about 600 individuals.

A note from PlantMom

English whitebeam is resistant to disease and is generally not susceptible to illnesses. In terms of care, this plant is fairly low-maintenance. When grown outdoors it needs little watering, and larger plants typically do not require pruning. Smaller plants, however, should be pruned after they have finished blooming. The English whitebeam is suitable for anyone with outdoor space, such as a garden or deck, and does not need extensive care experience.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Sorbus Anglica.

Light

English whitebeam comes from open habitats, such as sunlit meadows and forest edges, where light is abundant. It performs best in Full Sun but can also tolerate Partial Sun, adapting well to a range of sunlight conditions.

Temperature

English whitebeam shows strong adaptability to a range of climate conditions, from intense summer heat to cold winter weather. However, it still has a preferred temperature range for growth. If temperatures get too high, the plant can suffer from heat and humidity stress, which may lead to its death. In locations where temperatures approach the lower limit of its cold tolerance, providing insulation to protect the plant is important.

Fertilizer

Timing is important when fertilizing English whitebeam. Apply fertilizer in early spring and continue monthly until early summer. Fertilizer promotes attractive blooms and provides energy during both dormant and active growth periods.

Pruning

To ensure healthy growth, prune English whitebeam in early spring. Start by removing any dead or damaged branches, then thin out crowded areas to improve airflow. Shape the tree moderately to enhance its appearance. This practice not only improves its look but also reduces the risk of disease and encourages vigorous growth.
