ON THIS PLANT

Tillandsia schiedeana is a species of flowering plant in the genus Tillandsia. It was named for the collector Christian Julius Wilhelm Schiede. As an epiphyte it is found "growing in open tropical forests, and saxicolous, growing on cacti and burseras on steep dry slopes in semiarid regions in Mexico, Central America, West Indies, Venezuela, and Colombia at elevations of 750 to 5,500 feet."

A note from PlantMom

Tillandsia schiedeana is generally resistant to disease and usually not prone to illnesses. However, it can develop rot if air circulation is poor. Its care level is rated medium because it needs frequent misting to maintain humidity and a small amount of fertilizer mixed into the water. This plant is best for growers with some experience, since prolonged improper care can kill it even when problems aren't immediately apparent.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Tillandsia Schiedeana.

Light

Tillandsia schiedeana comes from habitats such as forest understories that provide natural shade. It prefers partial sun but can tolerate full sun when necessary.

Water

Tillandsia schiedeana originates from humid tropical regions and thrives in environments with consistent moisture and high humidity. Although it is drought-tolerant, it prefers conditions similar to those found in rainforests. To keep it healthy and vigorous, it's important to water it weekly and mist it regularly, especially when grown indoors as an epiphyte.

Temperature

Tillandsia schiedeana prefers warm conditions. If temperatures drop too low, growth may halt or the plant can suffer frost damage. It tolerates high heat and humidity well and needs a steady level of moisture in its environment. Still, very high temperatures and humidity can increase the risk of fungal disease. In dry environments, regular watering and misting are required to keep the air sufficiently humid. The plant is vulnerable to abrupt temperature changes, so maintaining a fairly stable temperature is important.

Pruning

Tillandsia schiedeana does not need soil to thrive. To encourage healthier growth, prune the plant in early spring to remove any dead leaves. It's important to use sterilized scissors to prevent the spread of diseases and to improve aeration. Regular pruning not only enhances the plant's appearance but also improves light penetration, both of which support its vitality. Be sure to handle the plant carefully to protect its delicate leaves.

Reader questions.

What are the sunlight requirements for Tillandsia schiedeana?

Tillandsia schiedeana, also known by its botanic name, requires specific sunlight conditions to thrive. It needs about 3-6 hours of sunlight, categorizing its needs under partial sun. For areas classified as full shade, they should receive less than 3 hours of sunlight. It's important to thoughtfully observe the way sunlight moves through your garden throughout the day. Selecting locations that offer an ideal balance of light and shade will ensure the happiness and health of your Tillandsia schiedeana.
