ON THIS PLANT

Physalis arenicola, commonly known as sand groundcherry, is a species of flowering plant in the nightshade family, Solanaceae. Native to the southwestern United States and northern Mexico, it thrives in sandy soils and desert habitats. The plant typically grows to a height of 30-60 cm, featuring hairy stems and alternate, ovate to lanceolate leaves. Its yellow flowers, adorned with purple-brown spots, are followed by small, edible fruits encased in papery husks.

Traditionally, Native American tribes have utilized Physalis arenicola for medicinal purposes, including treating respiratory ailments, fever, and rheumatism. The plant is also appreciated as an ornamental choice due to its attractive flowers and fruits. However, caution is advised: some parts of the plant may be toxic if ingested in large amounts, and contact with the plant can cause skin irritation in some individuals.
