ON THIS PLANT

Yucca thompsoniana, commonly known as Thompson's yucca, is a perennial plant native to the southwestern United States. Belonging to the Agavaceae family, this species can reach up to 10 feet in height and spread about 6 feet wide. The plant features long, narrow green leaves that can grow up to 3 feet in length. These leaves are stiff, pointed, and have sharp tips that can be hazardous if not handled with care.

In late spring or early summer, Yucca thompsoniana produces tall spikes adorned with creamy white, bell-shaped flowers. These blooms have a sweet fragrance that attracts pollinators, including moths and bees.

The plant thrives in well-drained soil with full sun exposure, although it can tolerate some shade. While Yucca thompsoniana is drought-tolerant once established, it requires regular watering during its first year of growth.

Historically, Native Americans have used Yucca thompsoniana for various medicinal purposes, including treating headaches, arthritis, skin conditions, and digestive issues.

Overall, Yucca thompsoniana is an attractive ornamental plant, favored for its unique appearance and low maintenance requirements, making it a great addition to gardens or landscapes.

A note from PlantMom

Thompson's yucca has moderate disease resistance but is more sensitive to humidity and excessive watering. It becomes more prone to disease if it receives little light and is overwatered. Regarding care, Thompson's yucca is drought-tolerant and can endure long periods without water. It needs little fertilizer and only occasional pruning. This makes it appropriate for people at any skill level, especially those who prefer to spend less time on plant care and who may sometimes be away from home for extended periods. It is a suitable choice for those who do not want to invest much time in upkeep but still want an easy-to-maintain plant.

CARE GUIDE

How to keep Yucca Thompsoniana.

Light

Originating in arid areas, Thompson's yucca does best in full sun, as its native habitat has strong sunlight and very little shade. It can also tolerate partial sun, providing some flexibility in its growth.

Temperature

Thompson's yucca does well in warm conditions and requires relatively high temperatures during the growing season to support growth and metabolism. It prefers plenty of sunlight, proper moisture levels, and good airflow. However, it can be damaged by very low temperatures and by overwatering. It is also important to maintain balance and avoid excessively high heat and overly dry conditions.

Fertilizer

Thompson's yucca requires only light applications of fertilizer once or twice a year during the growing season. Do not fertilize in winter or in summer when the plant is dormant. Cut back on feeding for repotted plants and wait a couple of months after repotting before applying fertilizer. Fertilizing helps maintain healthy growth and encourages flowering.
